Presidents Letter to Members May 2, 2009 To the members of LIAFO: The warmer temps have finally arrived, spring is here and your Board of Directors has been hard at work planning for the 2009 football season. The 2009 meeting schedule has been posted on our website. The first general meeting will be held on Thursday, June 25th at Bethpage High School. At this meeting your rule and case books will be available. The Mandatory Part II Exam and Rules Review will be on Tuesday, August 25th at 7pm and the mandatory Annual meeting for elections will take place on Thursday, October 15th at 7:30pm. A change for this year, our dinner will be held at the Woodlands Catering Hall in Woodbury on Tuesday, November 24th. The 2009 candidate class began on March 9th and will soon be finishing up the eight week class schedule. Let’s all do our best to make our new candidates feel welcome at our June meeting. The referee development clinic will be held on Monday, May 18th at 7:30pm. This clinic is mandatory for any varsity crew officials wanting to be the crew back-up referee and for those seeking a referee position or to be placed on the referee fill-in list. Currently, there is one referee crew opening available. The following night, Tuesday, May 19th, the referee selection committee will interview all officials who want to be considered for referee crew openings and the referee fill-in list. If you have taken the class in the past you will need to retake it on May 18th. Applications are available on the website. If you have any questions please contact Craig Marshall. Our annual draft will be held on Monday, June 22nd at 7:30pm. If any varsity crew member wishes to leave his position on a crew they should contact 1st Vice President Bob Miller and inform him of their intentions to go back into the draft. In addition, all non-crew, varsity eligible officials may enter the draft. If you have any questions or need any further information about the draft contact Bob Miller. The 2009 LIAFO Unsung Hero golf outing will be held on Monday, July 20th at North Shore Towers golf course. For further information please contact Jim Anderson. The new ratings committee is hard at work processing the numbers. Your ratings will arrive in advance of the draft. The Board appreciates your patience with regard to this matter. If you have any questions about ratings, please contact Ron Winchester or Kevin Healy. Contract negotiations, for all sports are continuing at this time. From all discussions thus far, the fifth man continuation is positive. I expect to have more definitive information by the draft date. The first regular season game will be on Saturday, September 12th at 1:30pm. Week #2 is a holiday so most; if not all varsity games will be played on Thursday, September 17th. We have an eight game regular season schedule with playoffs in weeks 9, 10, and 11. Week 9 will be played at the home field of the higher seeded team. I would like to extend my thanks and the thanks of the Board of Directors to all the members of the association for all of the time and energy that you give. It is both my honor and privilege to serve as President of this great organization. We have taken great steps to ensure that we are all prepared and ready to take the field each week. Each one of us can do our part to continue that standard of excellence by getting involved. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me or any member of the Board. I look forward to seeing all of you at the June meeting. Very Truly Yours, James H. Herbert President
